Welcome @Members to the second round of our Hotlap Championship. The goal is simple, set your fastest time using the in-game time-trial mode, with the car and track combo posted. If you're like me and not a setup god then you can opt to use one of the default presets (loose, stable or OEM - where available) as we'll be running separate divisions for open and default setups.

Date: 1st October 2018 - 31st October 2018
Car: Ford Mustang '66 2+2 Fastback
Track: California Highway Stage 1

california_highway_stage1.png

Some basic stuff
If you've previously set a time on this combo and you are unable to beat it, please take a screenshot before leaving the session or your time will be excluded. If you are taking part in the Default Setup division and are unable to beat a time you have previously set on a Custom Setup, then you must record video evidence to prove your time was set on default or your time will NOT be included for the round.

If you are taking part in the 'default' division, you must select an in-built default preset, do NOT match a custom setup to the in-game defaults. We will be using the SMS leaderboards to verify the times and setups used.

The track limits will be defined by the in-game limits, not "Two wheels within the white lines". If those limits seem too loose or too tight, drive your lap accordingly. We will not be reviewing laps unless they are suspiciously fast.

Current Top 5
(Last updated 01/11/2018 - 11:21 UTC)

1. 3:24.140 (D) @Cluck
2. 3:25.962 (C) @Nada
3. 3:26.733 (D) @Born2BSlow
4. 3:29.220 (C) @Puffpirat
5. 3:30.533 (D) @Hujkis

(D) = Default Setup | (C) = Custom Setup

Good luck and have fun, because fun is what this is all about!

I am not much of a fan of old cars but I'll try my best this time for TT.

Key thing to watch for, with all the old cars in the game, is braking earlier than you would normally think you need to. Even with the tyres that are on the default 'loose' or 'stable' setup, there isn't a lot of grip available, both in braking or acceleration, so time your braking and throttle carefully. Once you're into the swing of it, it's a lot of fun.

No idea what times to expect out of this. Given that I've done a 3m32s on my 1st clean, proper flying lap, I think we'll see some runs in the low 3m20's, maybe even in the high 3m10's. Without doing some more runs, it's hard to tell how much time can be gained though. Will be a lot of fun finding out, that's for sure!

Even if you don't set a fast time, you should at least have fun with this combo. It might seem frustrating at first - stepping into old cars always takes some getting used to - but stick with it and you should end up with a big smile on your face :)

EDIT : When you've set the best time you think you're capable of, open up the car setup and fit the vintage tyres. This will give you a much better idea of what this car was like, back in the 60s and yes, the tyres really are shockingly bad (in terms of grip, or lack of!). It makes you realise just how far tyres have come in 50 years. I'm sure @Jussi_SMS could shed some more light on that :)

Are the tyres on 'stable' different?
Loose and Stable use the same tyres. Sorry, I should have been clearer. I never use the 'Stable' default setups which is why it didn't occur to me to point that out. In hindsight, I should have just typed "tyres that are on the default setups" :)

Is this with heel-and-toe and H-shifter... or can I use the paddle shifters?
If not, I will probably break my ankles and the crappy H-Shifter of my Logitech G29 :D

There's nothing stopping you using autoclutch and/or paddle shifts, if manual shifting with a clutch is a no-go. I would suggest that you make sure you lift the throttle when you shift up and also blip the throttle on the downshifts, to prevent the rears locking up :).

Ideally, you will be wanting to manual clutch with a shifter but that's not always going to be possible for some of our members, we do appreciate that.

short cuts? Nope. I'm just driving and learning as I go along where the cut-track areas are and using the maximum amount of space available :)

If anybody finds themselves struggling for lines etc, this was my 2nd valid lap. It should give you an idea of how early you need to brake and how careful you need to be on the throttle out of the slow corners. It's still far from perfect (it's only my 2nd lap after all) but should at least help :)

Colour me happy, first few (dozen or so) laps and I'm within half a second of the world's fastest chicken...you get the hang of this pretty quickly if you stick at it.

You might not want to look at the leaderboard :cigar:

The car mentioned in the title is a bit misleading, as we have the 2+2 Fastback (which most people used so far, obviously), and we have the '66 RTR TransAm...

I've edited the title and OP to make it clearer but given that RTR isn't mentioned and the banner is of the classic Mustang, I didn't think it would cause any confusion. I'll know better next time.
