Blame the American occupation all those years ago @Jamesl91
Back on topic... How much did that frame set you back?? Curious & mentally planning/ budgeting ;)

@FuBii the frame is the P1 from Sim-Labs, supplemented with wooden board for non-supporting mounting plates (which now the setup is a little more final I intend to put a carbon fibre wrap over).

I've been doing things slowly to smooth out costs, but ultimately the rig now consists of

  • P1 from SimLabs, with Wheel Deck and Sparco Seat (which supports wheels like G920 and the podium)
  • Fanatec Podium DD1 F1 EU
  • Fantec Clubsport SQ1.5 Shifter
  • Heusinkveld Sprint Pedals (no mounting plate - Barry Roland described it as hard to mount, £15 worth of M5x10s plus M5 spring ball Tnuts)
  • Custom button box (expensive enough for a DIY, probably spent £60 on it, though I'm sure you can shop around for the parts)
  • A PC with a 1080 Ti
  • Several pieces of wood from your local DIY store, plus a handful of other M6/M8 bolts
You can do the maths...I prefer not to!

I didn't want to do intermediate steps over several years, so buying order was based on getting my preferred components in the most practical order.

Rig first - sinced fixed mounting is far superior to any flex between chair and pedals (and it was nice that the table didn't shake when using a shifter)
If you have pedals going through a wheel to plug in, then get pedals next. Many say they're the biggest upgrade anyway, and if I got the wheel first, I would have no working pedals (moving from the G920)

Ultimately I have the good fortune of being able to consider these awesome components. For reference I think the biggest quality of life change was simply moving from a table mounted setup that needed to be packed away, to one that was permanent and always ready. Changing your startup time from 15 mins of trying to ensure the wheel was firmly fixed in place to a few seconds for a computer to come on is really amazing.

Well, at least I've got the pc bit sorted haha
Nuts, bolts, washers & wood I can pocket from work along with additional tools
Time to start selling my body though aha...

There are cheaper ways to do it, even with the 4040 aluminium. You pay a premium for the package sim-labs deliver, but with the guarentee that all the parts you need are included and have been tested well for the purpose.

I actually tried to do the 4040 aluminium and the cost of the aluminium alone came to more than the simlab GT1 evo. So instead I'm just waiting to be in a position to afford that.

Well that also depends on the usage of Material. With a properly triangulated frame, even with mostly 20x20 Profiles and only a few 40x40, the rig would be stiff enough. Maybe slightly less convenient to get in, but lighter.

how have you managed to keep it all boxed? get home and get it open! :D
Well I was actually on a flow with my G29 crushing my old lap times. Nothing happened for a long time and suddenly you are on a steep learning curve. Had a lot of fun doing so and with new equipment it takes a lot of time to get back on your original level.

i went from G29 to csl elite and formula v2 and the biggest differences iv found, is pace has improved because of the detail i can feel now but also consistency too. i tried my old g29, 1 week after using my fanatec gear and the difference is so big. the g29 is so basic. so definately worth the expense

For anyone with the Advanced Podium module and smaller hands - you can flip the paddles round to be on the front of the mounting, rather than the back of the mounting. the 3-4mm actually makes an appreciable difference, and hopefully will reduce the strain I was getting from putting pressure on the paddles with finger tips.

It's far more entertaining watching the speculation unfold :p

It's a toggle switch on the power lines of 2 different SSDs, which have their own Windows install for different purposes. 1 for racing (minimal apps, drivers, things in the background; C drive only etc.); and the other for work & general use. Yes changing the boot order in the bios or using a bootloader works too, but where's the fun in that? Physical switches ftw! I also love how goofy it looks :D

If I flip it during a race, I'm going to have a bad time. Could call it the going nuclear rage quit switch I guess.
