Ok. Since this is going to be my first endurance race in ACC (and literally my 3rd race in the game), any key pieces of advice for preparation (not setup, as I will just be taking whatever magic @Puffpirat provides). I'm thinking about little tweaks for HUD, button bindings, quirks of ACC pits/driver swap etc. What I've gathered so far.

  • Driver Swap: controlled by the driver
  • Can leave and rejoin race session: yes
  • HUD: can't move the elements, but can move farther/closer in VR
  • Pitting: I'll see what @drukqs Pit tutorial reveals
  • Driver swap: ??
  • Any suggestions for making use of prepared setups /strategies?
  • Key bindings?: I already have bindings for TC, ABS and brake bias. Any other suggestions for GT3 / Aston V8?
  • How does team joining / livery work - is this race doing custom liveries, do we have a custom one we would run locally for on stream?
  • Setup/strategy: can your team members edit on your behalf like in iRacing, or must everything be done by the current driver?

We have a team server for that, we'll schedule something next week

Lights(including rain light) wipers if you dont have them already

Liveries will be posted on OP for download, further "installation" info will come soon

For keybinding do not forget the Starter button (or you will stay in pit till end of race)
HUD, you can move everything in the Option menu | HUD (you select how many pixel offset) this way i can see actually the HUD on my triple without having to turn my head at 90º

edit: add screenshot and tips

this how it looks like:

also if you have triple or if you want to modify some other view settings use the ESC menu after hitting drive to have View settings

also you can use those for moving your view with your keyboard:

And don't do what I did and turn off Auto Clutch, it makes pulling away an absolute pain in the arse!

Driver swap is incredibly simple, but there's a bit of teamwork required as there's no visual representation to tell you that you are now in control of the car when you take over.

Pitting. The GOLDEN RULE (yes, capitals AND bold!) is that you DO NOT CHANGE OUT OF 1ST GEAR . The pit limiter will only function in 1st gear and straying over the pit speed limit will give you an instant drive-through. Practice your pit-entry, slow down and engagement of the pit-limiter so that you know exactly when to do it.

I've only learned this stuff in the last few days but as Ricardo has mentioned, there's a 'team server' up and running so that we can practice things like driver swaps etc.

Only rolling starts so manual clutch is only a nuisance

It's pulling away from the pit stops that got on my nerves. It was habit more than anything that I disabled it for, but it took one stall too many coming out of the pits that got me re-enabling it.

I personally have everything on manual and never had any issue. Only problem i could encounter was:

Unable to change selection in the pit menu when you get to your pit stop position (left and right doesnt respond any more)

You wont be able to do driver swaps with him, unless Ricardo put you in a team on the server.

@UnstopaPaul I'll be doing the Silverstone ESS race tomorrow evening, but can then do do some driver swap practice if want to. Or can do it another night if Monday isn't good for you.

I messed my first 'long' race by switching 2nd in the pit, so definitively a worthy advice. The drive through message only comes once you've passed the 50 panel tho.

For the autoclutch, it seems to me that even if you turn it off, some cars doesn't have any (e.g. Porsche?).

On the 13th of April, Ricardo came to us with a proposal. He uploaded a poster for a charity race, in aid of Racing Against Dementia, that was taking place on the 22nd of May and posted "I wanna do this one"

Little did I know at this point that in just 6 days time my mother was to pass away from Alzheimer's.

When the dust had settled (so to speak), I made up my mind that I would take part but I would only do it if I could race in the same team as Ricardo. In no amount of time, our team was created, with special dispensation given to run a 5-man team so that we could have Manu with us too. We quickly put together 3 teams. It was quickly becoming apparent just how many of our staff and members were dealing with this disease, either in their own family or in close loved ones' families.

Now there remained one small problem. Well, two small problems. Okay, two MASSIVE problems:

1. I didn't have the sim, Assetto Corsa Competizione, installed as I removed it in October 2018 when I packed up sim-racing for my new life. Which segues nicely into the 2nd problem;

2. I hadn't raced in well over 2½ years. In fact, it was probably knocking on 3 years since I'd had any real 'passion' for racing. It was also 4 years since I'd done any sort of team endurance race - my one and only endurance event being in a different sim at a different circuit. I had but 6 weeks to sort that out.

Problem 1 was easy to rectify, it just took the click of a mouse. Problem 2 might be a bit more tricky. Could I still race? Did I still want to race?, was the more important question. Only time would tell. Let's get problem #1 out of the way first.

With the sim installed I fired the game up and tried to get to grips with it. It was not a good start. I chose a car that I thought would be an easy and forgiving drive, only to find it understeered worse than a oil tanker ship. HELP! A swap to the Aston and I immediately felt more at home. My laptimes were dropping and I was soon in the right ballpark. Not quick, but not the total disaster that my other attempts had been. But this was solo driving, an empty track, just a few laps, just like my time-trialling habits. Racing with traffic, with a full load of fuel and racing for 75 minutes, twice, was going to be a different story. Racing is a completely different ball game to time-trials and time-trials were all I had done in a long while.

Meanwhile, Tom (Battenberg as I still know him) had also been beavering away in the background on our unique car liveries for the race. When he showed me the Aston livery, for the car I was driving, I almost cried. I sniffled a lot, and was bloody close to tears, but it was to be later on that I full-on burst into tears looking at it. On the rear of the car, and across the front of the bonnet, were two simple words. Words that made a grown man cry.

"For Carol"

Each of our cars were to sport a similar tribute, two words that would mean more than anything in this world to those they were for:

For Pauline
For Stella
For Gudrun

We were racing for all four of you. We were also racing for everybody that is affected by this terrible disease.

We fast forward to the weekend of the race. We had successfully coped with the 2-hour test race, swapping drivers in the pits, lapping cars, overtaking cars. I had done a race and not crashed. We should be OK. In the background our members, friends and family had raised £1295 to be donated to Race Against Dementia. We wanted to surprise the organiser with the donation during her broadcast and surprise her we did. Immediately after the donation was completed we all sat there watching her stream, waiting for the penny to drop. Those 2 minutes felt like a lifetime, but the moment she realised was worth every second of the efforts we all went to. It was, to coin a cliché, priceless. As a small community, we made a HUGE difference. Not only to Thea, not only to the charity, but to the millions of people around the world dealing with dementia. Not the money aspect, £1300 is a drop in the ocean in that regard (not to belittle the, frankly, outstanding amount that it is), but that moment, those moments are what make a difference. Every single person that donated can feel incredibly proud for helping produce that reaction.

I won't dwell too much on the race itself because the results don't matter. What did matter was the laughs we shared as a team throughout the 12 hours. The shared laughter during 'Penalty Hour'. The shared amazement at the donation total going up, past £3000, past £4000, past £5000. What mattered most was that team spirit, supporting a very personal charity event and doing something jolly bloody good. To my teammates, Tom, Shepard, Ricardo and Manu, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. It was the highest honour and privilege to do this race with you guys as my teammates.

I am still buzzing from it all. I won't say I'm an ACC convert, there are aspects of the sim that still frustrate me enormously - especially from the 'driving as a team' aspect - but my joy for sim racing has not diminished. This race is only the beginning of Cluck 2.0

Hey everyone,
Most or all of you were aware of Cluck's situation with his mother, but what you didnt knew was we(staff) had almost daily updates on her condition.Everyday Cluck came to us to get things out of his chest and reading his posts i was like what the fuck can i do? You cant do anything, just be there, reading and posting hug gifs. There's moments in life you just feel like shit and useless.
So yeah the day i saw Thea's organizing a charity race i thought yeah thats it,thats a thing we can do,at first i asked for people to make a team with me, but you guys made this single event a big one, after the interest you guys showed i went to our staff channels and said yeah think its worth to get a thread done and tag everyone and maybe get a couple teams on and it all started you know the rest.
i dont know whatelse to say, im so fucking PROUD of all of you
THANK YOU ALL

From Thea
"Hey Ricardo, to be fair I am still super hyped about this weekend
I've literally emailed all my work colleagues this morning to tell them how crazy the weekend was, I hope I can ride this hapiness for a while
You guys made it extra special!"

"Jeff has been playing the video of me reacting to donations and every time it gets to me! :)
So I should really thank all of you,i hope you actually enjoyed the driving part of it:)"

From Jeff
"hey Ricardo,
thank you SO MUCH for everything RSR did taking part this weekend"
