If it's too expensive, there is no sensible player base to do anything with it aaaaaaand it's dead.
I don't feel a win at all. Most of ams2 content offers little interest to me and it feels like a bit of an amateur mod compared to pcars content currently.I can almost guarantee (and this is without any inside info) that if they tried to release a more 'hardcore' sim, with the same amount of content as pCARS2, it would bury SMS as the sales would nowhere near match the production costs. Besides, pCARS1 and 2 have amply demonstrated that the sim community is fickle and VERY tribal.
Will it appeal to most sim racers who bought pCARS1 and 2? No. Will it appeal to a lot of people that bought pCARS1 and 2 and were disappointed that it wasn't as 'fun' as they were expecting? Almost certainly. I'll be honest, I bloody loved the NFS Shift games, it was those very games that led me to the old NoGrip forum where Ian hatched his 'cunning plan' to create pCARS1. The first pCARS was in a freak anomaly, the perfect game, produced in a unique way and released at the perfect time. pCARS2 was unlikely to ever hit the same highs and I don't believe it even came close in sales (which is sad and hugely disappointing for SMS I'm sure). pCARS3 was going to have to change direction or the series would have ended with what we have now, which would also be a shame.
As mentioned by Havocc, I think SMS have pulled an absolute blinder by licensing their engine to Reiza. SMS get to produce a game that sells, securing their future and giving the vast majority of car game players a game that is focussed on fun. Reiza get to produce something far more focussed that will appeal to the sim nerds. Everybody wins.
Agreed but as a big fan of pcars of old what's presented so far is not for me and looking at other sources not for the majority of sim racers either.trouble is, SlowBloke, nobody is going to produce a game that appeals to everybody. pCARS2 came close but was let down by certain 'flaws' for want of a better word. It also didn't initially sell very well from what I heard on the grapevine, which would have cost SMS dear. The perfect game would never come out as it would bankrupt the studio that produces it . I'm on the fence with AMS2, but it does look like there will be a lot of content coming out, a lot of which is totally unique to that game, giving people something genuinely new to play. But for those who want the same old tired set of circuits and cars, yeah, it's a hard sell.
Hence the vocal disappointment of their existing customer baseI strongly suspect their existing customer base is not who they're aiming the game at
