This is the thread where all drivers who want to start with iRacing will get tips and hints. Feel free to ask your questions here.

Here is a list of websites, which are important to get the most out of iRacing (sent me a pm if I miss anything);

Trading Paints (you need this, if you wanna see all the fine liveries from the other cars and to upload your own designs):
https://www.tradingpaints.com/showroom/filter/from=everyone,sort=popular,ad=DESC,pos=0

Kutu Apps (free program for streaming and recording. Also has some nice features like a fuel calculator):
http://ir-apps.kutu.ru/#!/

Kapps by Kutu (better version of Kutu Apps, with a very nice iRacing overlay. You have to pay for it):
https://kapps.kutu.ru/

JRT - Joel Real Timing (raceoverlay with good features. Pro version costs 15€):
https://joel-real-timing.com/index_en.html

Crew Chief (I don't like the spotter in iRacing):
http://thecrewchief.org/

Setup Sync (good website , where you can find shared setups):
http://iracingsetupsync.nickthissen.nl/

Craig's Setup Shop:
https://craigsetupshop.co.uk/dashboard

Pure Driving School:
https://puredrivingschool.com

All hidden pit makros:

There is a new setup site in the WWW. https://puredrivingschool.com
Right now they have the best teams with some of the best drivers in iRacing. You can get one package for free for one month. After that one package costs 5,99€/month or you can buy every package for 9,99€/month.

Tips:
1. Don't die;
2. Never give up unless your wheel crook to 90° one side;

@2scoops I'm good lol. Most of those setups everyone is paying for are decent but have their shortcomings. For 99% of the people out there they are great. I'm just not a fan of what it's become to pay for setups now.

I’ve just got to road Class D. What do I need to do now to advance my licence?
Which races count towards licence upgrade?
I’m really confused with these iRacing races & schedule..

@Jaco P. you have to do at least 4 races in a class D series, i was doing mainly Fanatec Global Challenge in the Caddy, as it is a free car, when i was in D. Also it is quite similar to GT cars.
Another good way to progress imo is the Skip Barber series, it is really popular so you shouldn't have problems to find races
If you have the 4 races and haven't hit the 4.0 on SR you can also do races from the class below, in your case the Mazdas to get you Safety Rating high enough to get promoted

When you are on the iRacing membersite and hit the "RACE NOW" button, you can see the MPR Banner (in my example red, because i have the A license). If it's green, then the race counts for your promotion and will effect your license.

I now also have acquired D class.While I'm happy to race the mazda a little more, what would people suggest for next steps. I see Skip Barber mentioned, though if I make purchases I would like them to steer me towards races that we might do as RSR cars. Most RSR races seem to feature GT3 cars. Audi R8, Ferrari 488 and Porsche RSR seem to be the favourites and looks like it would be easy for me to find a team mate ;). Perhaps I should look at the Ferrari GT3 challenge? Is that well enough populated? I'd guess so, but you never know :D

I've just resubscribed, realised I already have D licence from my last stint on iRacing. Haven't been brave enough to enter a race yet, I need to do some testing to get used to it again. Going to stick with the MX5 for a little while.

The pit macro post isn't 100 % correct btw... I wrote a little guide for them aaaages ago... which I quickly translated to Engrish and am spamming here now:

Stress-Free Pit Stops Without Clickity-Click

As you all know, you have to set up pit stops by hand in iRacing. What not everyone, especially newcomers, knows is that you can make quick(er) changes with the help of chat macros. This is especially useful if you don’t use an app like Crew Chief that you can shout at to change your settings. :)

With the keyboard combinations Alt-1, Alt2, … , Alt-5 you have access to five different presets, that you can even adapt to your liking! You can find these in the options menu under the “OPTIONS” tab. The header you are looking for is “AUTO TEXT CHAT” (see screenshot below).

A chat macro begins with # and ends with $

The commands are as follows:

lf = (left front) change the left front tire
lr = (left rear) change the left rear tire
rf = (right front) change the right front tire
rr = (right rear) change the right rear tire

ws = (windshield tearoff) tear off the windshield film to get a clean windshield

fr = fast repair

fuel Xg = refuel with X gallons of fuel

fuel Xl = refuel with X liters of fuel

clear = remove all checks from all pit stop options, only repairs will be done or penalties served

cleartires = no tire changes will be made, fueling options remain untouched

You can combine these commands into one macro. For example, before I used Crew Chief my commands were:

Alt-1: #cleartires ws fuel 50l$ - No tires, clean windshield, give me 50 liters of fuel (I used to adjust the number by hand to what I needed while entering pits back in my ProtoGT days)
Alt-2: #clear lf rf lr rr ws$ - Change tires and clear my windshield, please!
Alt-3: #clear$ - Nothing, I’m good, thanks!
Alt-4: #cleartires fuel 5l$ - No tires, no cleaning, just gimme 5 liters, please! (Just in case I needed a spash’n’dash)
Alt-5: #lf rf lr rr ws fuel 500l$ - Full service, please!

Also, you can change the following values in the app.ini to “0” if you don’t want every single pit option checked at the start of a race and after a stop – including fast repairs:

Code:
    [Pit Service]
    autoResetFastRepair=0 ; Automatically request fast repair service once your vehicle exits pit road
    autoResetPitBox=0 ; Automatically request full pit service once your vehicle exits pit road
