Hi all,

For the last 6 months or so I have been itching to upgrade my current PC. It's around 5 years old, i5-4590 8gb and my GTX 1060/3gb. I play on a 22" 1080p monitor (nothing fancy). I'm set on moving to 1440p, 27" monitor, and probably 144Hz if I can. So I know there are lots of new shiny CPUs and GPUs due in the coming months, but I keep wondering, will I really need these new CPUs and GPUs to run my games close to max settings at 1440p? Most of the builds I look at are based around an RTX 2060 or 2070. I don't know much about the CPU side of things, but leaning towards Ryzen, something like a 5 3600. My absolute max budget for the PC is £1500. This does not include a monitor, I will buy this separately.

So, do I hang on, or will current components on the market tick all my boxes? I know @Noztra has told me to wait, but I keep wanting to upgrade! I will likely keep this new PC for 4 years or so. I don't have any intentions of ever running things like triples or ultrawide screen (unless I win the lottery) so a single monitor at 1440p is enough for me.

Cheers,
Colin

New GPUs aren't far off, so unless you HAVE to buy now, I'd wait.
I am also waiting, but i fear BigNavi will also cost ridiculous money... Never ever will i spend 600-1000€ for a GPU

I also understand that Nvidia will release the RTX 3080 first, so the less expensive cards will follow mostly likely in Q1 2021. Not sure if I will wait that long.

After release of RTX 30xx cards the price for RTX 20xx cards will drop down (unlikely much but still...) so I'd wait at least till the said release.

UPD: Considering the config in your signature is valid, I think whatever upgrade you chose: last year GPU and CPU or newer - you are going to have huge increase of performance anyway.

Yea that is my current setup. Any comparison of my CPU and GPU against the current stuff is a huge jump in performance.

your CPU is almost on par, or even weaker than current gen Ryzen 3300 (see here)
As for GTX 1060, if you can afford RTX 2070super - you'll feel really huge difference.

Definitely what the others also said. Wait for the next gen gpus, in a few months you’ll get way more bang for your buck. Normally xx80 and xx70 come out at the same time, don’t think you have to wait till 2021.
Zen3 will also come end of this year but probably after the new gpus. Same here, more bang for the buck but probably a smaller jump than on gpu side.

Thanks everyone. I’ll wait then :) Gives me a chance to save a little more for maybe an even better spec.

So.... RTX 3080 is likely to be the most sought after GPU after seeing those release figures...
I know I'd look at it once things settle down on my end :p

It will be interesting to see what happens with all the 2080Ti in stock when they start selling 3080 in like 2 weeks.... Still asking for 1200-2000 bucks is a bit unjustified then

I wouldn't be surprised if nvidia recompense the retailers for selling well below cost just to shift the stock. That's a far better option for nvidia (and us consumers) than taking the stuff back and dumping it :)

The 2080ti would have to drop a grand off its asking price for people to even consider it at this point now...

I dunno. There have been some models selling for about £1000, so if it got sold at £350 (for example) then it would undercut the new 3070 and there's always a market for that sort of thing. It's better for nvidia to do that than take them all back and bin them.

I have a RTX 2060 (non super), but it runs at 2000 MHz. That performance is enough for FullHD but not for 1440p. I'd recommend the performance of a 2070 / 2070 super for 1440p (or higher). Or something equivalent in the 3000er Series that I'd make sure to take a look into once independent Benchmarks are out.

I have the normal 2070.. its been fantastic for me but it does struggle to max my monitor refresh rate (100hz) with all the eye candy on

You mean because of the power draw, or because of the new connector?

I don't :p

(My PSU is 850W - Corsair RM850i unit)
750W TXm SERIES , my current gpu has 275W power consumption, estimated power for my rig is 475w
