Had this issue a little while ago and it cleared itself, it has reared it's ugly head again.

I'm getting an error message 'Overclocking failed press F1 to reconfigure bios'

I haven't set any overclocking though.

Ideas?

Aside from updating the motherboard BIOS or resetting it to defaults, no idea. What motherboard is it?

Lots of reports of that problem with the Asus board from a v.quick search on t'internet.

Example - mentions RAM as the cause but also if you do a forced shutdown, rather than let Windows shut down normally

This^^
go to UEFI, reset to defaults, do update, than modify settings accordingly (boot order, RAM xmp, etc)
It should be very easy to do update from UEFI as it can download the correct file from internet.
EDIT: apparently it was/is called 'EZ Flash 3 utility'....Marketing departments, right? :)

Thanks, I'm sending it away to a chap nearby who is going to look at it. I only have a wireless keyboard so that's not working until it's booted.

Hopefully get it back before Monday.

He said it could be a gpu problem, I was going to change it anyway, but might not get money back now.

Bloody PC's :(

'Overclocking failed press F1 to reconfigure bios' indicating 'a gpu problem'? Doesn't seem plausible to me.

I had that problem on my Asus Z170 too sometimes. Reloading a saved profile or if you have none the optimized defaults always helped :)

You need to adjust the BIOS settings when you get it back, to allow USB support at boot. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and they work just fine as soon as the PC switches on.

As per the link in my post and Hujkis' reply above, it's not likely to be the GPU.

Depends on too many things, like:
- will you overclock
- what IO ports you would like (eg. USB type-c is nice-to-have these days)
- will you use the onboard sound processor
- do you have any pci components, alongside gpu
- how many sata disks
and so on...

Just for completeness and in case it would help anyone else that may have this problem.

Received the PC back today, a new CMOS battery was installed and it seems to have fixed the problem for now.

hehe, nice! That actually make sense :)
Damn you asus, for using a battery that won't last more than 2 years.
