Advice on new PC (3 Viewers)

Hello guys, I need advice.

I'm currently impatiently waiting for the Ryzen release which is rumored to be at the end of February. And I will most likely buy after the first reviews of the mainboards came in.

My problem is, should I get the Gtx1080 along with it or should I wait until the end of May, where Vega is rumored to hit the stores?
Given that I would most likely sell the 1080 if Vega proves to be on par with a 1080ti at a price equal or even lower than the 1080...

What would Brian Boitano do?

The thing is that I'm planning to have a full re-build of my pc, where everything besides the Psu gets binned or sold and I'm not keen on keeping my old 770's in the otherwise fully new environment.

You should know by now, Patrick, that life in PC land is an ever-changing game of "shall I buy now, or wait". I have always advised people that, if they have the funds to buy something now AND want to buy it now, then they should buy it now. There is always something new coming along in 6 months so, if you wait, you end up reading about something even better coming, so you wait again.

In short, buy what you want, when you can afford it and when you need it .

I agree with Cluck but Ryzen could be a valid reason to wait at least for some Tests and Benchmarks.
I would not wait for a Vegan Burger. It will not destroy the 1080 GTX you can believe that.

The performance of i7 6700K and 7700K mostly differs in the Clock and Boostclock. If you're thinking about the 1080 you have the money for a 6700K or 7700(K).

On Graphics I'd buy the 1070 because I don't see the 1080 being 200 EUR quicker and 600+ EUR is quite a lot. But if you don't mind, why are you even waiting?!

I'm waiting for Ryzen.
I've waited so long for it and I won't switch over to Intel a month before release.


The 1080 might b not be worth the 200 premium over the 1070 but I know myself... When I got a 1070 I will want more soon and will end up with an sli setup again, which I wanted to avoid.
Anyway, I will probably go by your advice and buy as soon as ryzen is there.

The price of the 1080 disgusts me, to be absolutely honest. I supplied a water-cooled 980Ti to a customer 12 months ago and they nearly cried at the price of that. Non-standard 1080 cards are similar money to that "crazy price" but they go right up to nearly £900 . People laughed when the original Titan came out at £1000.

I have the same problem @Invincible ... Want to build a new computer next 1-2 months but can't decide :O

I heard rumours of Nvidia 2070, 2070ti and 2080ti (rework of the 1080 etc.). Processor wise I will def. go with Intel. So many bad experience with AMD, never again!

I am also planning of get an ultrawide curved widescreen It will be huge expensive though...

Yep, which is why things have pretty much stagnated on the CPU front too. 5 or 10 percent performance increases are depressing - 20 years ago, we got 50-100% increases in CPU performance, year on year. I know things have to reach a critical point at some stage - you can't keep increasing performance at that pace forever - but things have ground to an almost halt for 3 years now .

The Palit Gamerock 1080 is currently @619 €, so roughly 500 £

I can guarantee, you won't be able to buy it for £500 over here. Cheapest 1080 card at overclockers.co.uk right now is £560 for a reference design.

Palit Gamerock is £610.

In contrast, the heavily overclocked, water-cooled 980Ti card I got for my customer, cost less than that last year.

Not completly true xD Newest leaks are saying those will be the next one they will launch. There won't be a 1080ti, they are doing a rework starting with 20xx. But in the end I do not know how precise those leaks are though.

Oh yea, Intel totally slammed on the brakes when it comes to CPU performance and unfortunately also Cores. Games could benefit from more cores at least 6 but Intel is really lazy here too.

I was going to upgrade my Jan 2015 PC Build this year to, but TBH I don't have any performance issues with the sim racing I do. I'm going to divert that money to a RIG I think..........

I would wait for Ryzen yes, since it's just around the corner and see how it compares, then go for the Intel build xD pCARS could actually benefit from more than 4 cores though.

GPU-wise I really wouldn't buy a 1080 now. On the one hand cluck is right and there is always something new coming. But with the inevitable whatever xx80Ti lauch in 1-2 months time the 1080 will drop in price (and they are out for more than half a year now).

Thanks Puffi, that are exactly my concerns too. I think I will start with a 1070 and sell it when Vega proved to be an upgrade. Rest of the build will contain a next phantom 630 ccase, a 525gb ssd( mx300), corsair h115i cpu cooler and 16 gb corsair vengeance 3000 mhz ram. Or do you guys think I should go for 32 gb right from the start?

sounds alright If the PC is only (or mostly) for gaming 16GB should be enough. RAM got more expensive in the last few months too... I have two 8GB RAM sticks, so if I ever need more, I could just add two.
