Hey guys,

For a while now I have been gaming on my 24" 1080p freesync screen. However with such small size comes a small FOV (45-50) and I notice that is hindering my peripheral view and view of corner apexes sometimes. So I am looking for an upgrade. One thing to take into consideration is that my GPU is a AMD R9 R390 chip so resolution might be a limiting factor here. Currently I've come up with two options and I would like to know from you guys what the better pick is with regard to simracing.

Option #1
Buy 2 more of the very same monitor I currently own, so 3 24" 1080p displays. Will my gpu be able to run 5760*1080 (is that the correct resolution) on medium-high?

Option #2
Buy a 27" 1440p monitor.

Thanks in advance?

I drove on my 3x 1080p 24" monitors for a while and it was great fun and a big step up from a single. The performance impact wasn't too bad surprisingly on my GTX 1080. You'll get much more out of triple screens than a single 27".

I'm currently on a 27inch and I run 60 FOV. It gives me a bit more view, but apex remain a restriction on some tracks. So it's triples or VR. Although I've always been intrigued by double/triple beamer setups to give a 180-270 degree viewrange. Although it packs up quite a bit of space :D

I used to run triple 24" which was really good but for the best view of upcoming apexes you can't beat vr ,the depth to the corner is so much better than any monitor setup.Go vr you will love it ☺️

VR is out of the budget right now and my r9 390 doesn't have the juice to keep it at 90fps.

Regarding the triple monitor option as it seems to be the better pick for simracing, is it going to be very heavy on the GPU? And currently I run freesync on my monitor, if I connect the same monitors with a Displayport adapter will the have freesync as well? After switching to freesync I cannot race without it.

I'd consider 144hz FHD instead of 1440p.

if you're gonna go down the single monitor route, you should go ultra wide 1440p... somewhere in the region of 34" :D

@Puffpirat Currently around 300-330! And I am still saving up for the fanatec Formula rim and the LC brake pedal, still unsure in what order to get them.

The Rift is currently about 450€ in Europe.

You could buy the McLaren GT3 rim instead of the formula... there, budget for oculus safed ;)

a 144Hz 27“ 1440p freesync screen costs the same.

PS I’d buy the LC brake first, gives more laptime :)

Hmm it is difficult. My GPU is not powerful enough to run Pcars 2 in 90Hz all the time so the oculus isn't the best way to go with this GPU I think. I found out that I only have 1 DP exit on my GPU, so if I go triple I need a DP hub (at least €100,-) and then I am limited to 60 fps 1080p across all screens. And my GPU doesn't push out 144 fps on 1440p I suspect so those options are then not utilised. Please, correct me if I am wrong with these statements.

So my GPU is really limiting my options here, but no way I am buying a new card with these prices :D. Let's hope for a crypto crash and then we all can buy good GPU's for 0 money on the second hand market.

Soo, drop the triple screen and perhaps go ultra wide?

Yeah difficult decision. Your card is maybe on the lower end of what can run pCARS in VR but it should easily do 45fps with ASW. Here the cheapest 34” 1440p start at 560€, 1080p at 350€.

Why not buy three of them?

What I can tell you from my experiences:

I upgraded from a 24'' FHD to a 27'' 1440p (144 Hz) BenQ a while ago and the difference was insane. Every game on minimum settings at 1440p looks better than on high settings at 1080p. And finally seeing more than 60 fps was also a blast. But I realized quickly that I had to upgrade my GPU as well, so whatever you do, a good GPU is probably key. Maybe would be worth waiting until all the Bitcoin nonsense is finally over and the market is flooded with used GPUs.

Not sure about buying a miner used gpu's...but hopefully it will create a nice decreasing supply/demand curve on market :)
In my opinion it's refresh rate > resolution
1440p 144hz > 1080p 144hz > 1440p 60hz.
If it's a monitor for gaming, check benchmarks for you gpu (or the gpu you will buy in near future) and see what framerates it can do in what resolution.
But than again, you have to keep in mind panel technology/quality, input lag etc...

have you thought about using head tracking (poor mans VR) ? I use an EdTracker Pro(https://www.edtracker.co.uk/). You can look around similar to being in VR, so you can see apexes etc even on a single screen.

I agree with Puff - I ran with ASW by choice 100% of the time with my old 980ti (only because I cranked up the gfx). It was absolutely fine at 45fps on the rift or I would not have done it. I definitely appreciate the additional smoothness of my 1080ti but I only bought that because the 980ti blew up.

Personally I would go with the rift assuming 390 is about same performance as a 970. That ofcourse is if racing is your priority.

I went with a 34 inch monitor when PC1 came out and it was really nice having the additional view but its not a game changer.

If your also into fps then higher refresh rate option might be tempting.

Would assume triples would tax the 390 as well...
